Gary's Story ~ Elk Teeth & Heirloom Turquoise

Some custom bolo ties begin with a design.

Gary's began with a story—and that story keeps growing.

Gary came to Mike's Custom Bolos with a vision for a truly one-of-a-kind bolo tie featuring elk teeth and turquoise. As Gary and Mike worked through the design together, the concept began to evolve into something far more personal than the original mockup.

At the center of the design is a beautiful turquoise pendant—but this isn't simply another piece of turquoise.

An Heirloom Finds a New Story

The turquoise pendant originally belonged to Kevra's mother. After her passing nearly six years ago, the pendant came into Kevra's care.

When the pendant was first considered for Gary's bolo, Gary asked whether the existing metal surrounding the turquoise could be removed, allowing the turquoise itself to become part of the new design.

Then Mike told Gary its story.

After learning that the pendant had belonged to Kevra's mother, Gary asked that the original metalwork remain exactly as it was.

He loved the history behind it.

Instead of removing part of the pendant's past to create something new, Gary chose to preserve that history and make it part of his own custom bolo tie.

Then the Design Took Another Turn

The original concept placed Gary's elk teeth and the heirloom turquoise pendant on a round silver stainless-steel centerpiece.

But Mike had another idea.

Mike knows artisans who create jewelry, furniture, and many other handcrafted pieces using elk antler and elk bone. After Mike told Gary about their work, the concept evolved again.

Rather than using the original stainless-steel base, the plan is now to have the centerpiece itself handcrafted from elk antler or elk bone.

The final material and construction are still being determined, and Gary's Story will be updated as his bolo progresses.

That means this finished piece will ultimately bring together Gary's elk teeth, a centerpiece created from elk material, Kevra's mother's heirloom turquoise pendant in its original setting, and Mike's custom craftsmanship.

Every major element will have a story of its own.

And together, they'll become Gary's Story.
