Kate's Story ~ Custom Grandma's Heirloom Bolo Tie

Some custom bolo ties begin with a design idea. Others begin with something that could never be replaced.

Kate contacted Mike's Custom Bolos through our store messaging board with a very special question. Her late grandmother had passed down a beautiful Sacred Heart brooch, and Kate wondered if we could transform it into a custom bolo tie—allowing her to wear a treasured piece of her grandmother in an entirely new way.

Our answer was yes—but heirloom pieces like Kate's require an entirely different level of care.

From Grandma's Brooch to Kate's Bolo Tie

Kate carefully shipped her grandmother's brooch to us. Once it arrived, Kevra and Kate began working together through messages to choose the leather color, bolo tip style, and finish that would complement the original piece without taking attention away from it.

Kevra created three different mockups so Kate could see how the various combinations would look before anything was permanently changed.

That step was especially important.

Family heirlooms aren't new materials coming off a shelf. They have already been loved, worn, handled, and carried through years—sometimes generations. Their age and history are part of what makes them priceless to the family who owns them.

And when you're working with something irreplaceable, there is no room for "Oops." One slip of a tool could permanently damage a piece of someone's family history.

A Delicate Transformation

Kate's centerpiece originally had all the hardware of a traditional brooch on the back, including the lapel pin, clasp, and supporting hardware. Mike carefully converted the piece so it could function securely as the centerpiece of a bolo tie while preserving the beauty and character of Grandma's original brooch.

The warm antique tones of the brooch helped guide the final choices.

Kate selected light brown braided leather paired with 1.03-inch ornate floral bronze tips. The bronze finish beautifully complements the original backing and border of the brooch, while the light brown leather gives the finished bolo a soft, timeless appearance.
