Uncle Randy's Story ~ A Custom Bolo Tie Creation

Some custom bolo ties begin with a customer placing an order.

Uncle Randy's began with one simple compliment.

Randy has always loved bolo ties, and Western wear has long been part of his style. So when he saw one of Mike's earliest handcrafted bolo ties featuring a striking silver Native American Chief–themed centerpiece, naturally, he noticed it.

What Randy may not have known was just how special that particular centerpiece was to Mike.

Back when Mike's Custom Bolos was just getting started, Randy's great-nephew purchased the silver centerpiece in Arizona as a gift for Michael. Measuring approximately 1–2 inches tall and wide, it was substantial, beautifully detailed, and at the time was one of the most valuable and special centerpieces Mike owned.

Mike turned it into a bolo tie—and he was pretty proud of that one.

Then Uncle Randy saw it.

He mentioned how nice the bolo tie was.

That was all it took. 🤠

When someone in the family genuinely loves something you've created, sometimes you already know where it belongs. The bolo that traveled from Arizona to Texas and became one of Mike's prized early creations found its next destination:

The silver Chief centerpiece was paired with 36 inches of black braided leather and finished with silver ornate floral tips, allowing the centerpiece itself to remain the focus. Handcrafted and assembled by Mike, the finished piece carries the look and character of a classic Western bolo while also holding a very personal family story.

Bolo ties are definitely a family affair for Uncle Randy and Aunt Sandy. Randy has always loved them, although keeping up with Sandy's collection might be impossible. Aunt Sandy once bought five bolo ties at one time and owns at least four for every one in Randy's collection!

But when Sandy buys for Randy, she makes it count—choosing some of the more valuable pieces, including Ancient Artifact bolo ties and special authentic Western pieces like this one. Between Sandy's collection and Randy's appreciation for a great Western bolo, the two of them are an absolute hoot and a very special part of the Mike's Custom Bolos family story.

Today, Randy's bolo carries several stories at once: the great-nephew who originally chose the centerpiece, the early days of Mike learning and perfecting his craft, and an uncle whose appreciation for a beautiful bolo was apparently all the convincing Mike needed.

Uncle Randy's story reminds us that the best pieces don't always stay with the person they started with. They end up exactly where they belong. And judging by that smile, we'd say this one found its home. 🤠

Of course, if Aunt Sandy keeps buying bolos four-to-one, Randy may need to pick up the pace. 😂
